Leaders
Get to know our Joy in Learning leaders, coordinators and liaisons!
All of our leaders (and helpers) are volunteers, except for one hourly position who oversees our pottery studio and kiln. If you are interested in sharing an interest as a helper or leader, let us know! The number and types of classes and activities depend on those who want to share their interests.
Beth Drake
Joy in Learning Coordinator
I love to play. Experiencing that freedom as a missionary kid to homeschooling mom, I became aware that through play we find our strengths. My greatest joy is witnessing a participant (at any age!) engaged in an activity that feeds their soul. I know that God is present there.
Sheppy Vann
Children’s Classes
I am a retired school teacher having spent almost half a century in that role. I am happiest when engaging young people in activities that encourage creativity and reinforce self-esteem. JIL is a wonderful way for children and adults to try something new and to experience the joy of creating together in a loving environment.
Emily Coleman
Acrylic Painting
I have always been interested in art. As a child, I never put down my pencils or brushes and developed my skills over a lifetime of practice. My high school art teachers shared wisdom and techniques with me, and I am happy for the chance to spread those lessons through Joy in Learning.

Cooking and Baking
Discerning where I experience joy led me to engage with young children and youth in many ways. Youth ministry and Sunday School teaching expanded to sharing my enjoyment of cooking with these ages and then adults. I feel the Holy Spirit with us when we are learning, laughing and being in our creation of love through cooking.
Rene’ Stubblefield Poe
Oil Painting
I have been painting in the Impressionist tradition since 1999, both in studio painting as well as “en plein air.” I love to paint! Sometimes the result is pleasing, sometimes it’s more of a challenge. But every single time I paint, I learn. I overcome. I face a fear or two (or more), but I am rewarded by the process so much more than by the product.
Ellen O’Farrell
Punch Needle
I’ve been doing punch needle for about two years and crafts with the Nations Ministry Elders for nearly three years. My approach to both is ‘We could try that’ and ‘What if we… ?’ I love being with people as we share ideas and create treasures.
Cass Fagan
Head Pottery
I have played with clay most of my life, probably started in the sandbox! Since retirement from a career in medical technology, I’ve had more time to devote to exploration, learning and teaching. The joy and confidence from creating something beautiful to your own senses carries over into all aspects of life. That is why I see one, do one, teach one.
Sandra Plant
Telling Your Story
My mission is to encourage aspiring writers to tell their stories in their own authentic voices. Success of these little stories is measured in the joy they bring, not only to the writer but to friends and family. I am a lifelong writer with work published in newspapers, magazines and anthologies. But the next best creative pleasure in my life is helping individuals bring their own stories to life.
Linda Rue
Preston Taylor Liaison
I love to serve families and children in need. I have spent a lot of time over the past 10 years in the Nations neighborhood delivering Meals on Wheels to seniors and then became interested in Preston Taylor Ministries after-school programs. Being able to support a cause that I love, in addition to connecting church members who have the same volunteer goals, has been a blessing to me.

Guitar Gathering
After earning a bachelor's degree in music education, I pursued a career as a professional musician. This included working in shows at the old Opryland theme park, traveling with several club bands, and working on the road with a country music artist. I have found that teaching guitar during Joy in Learning is very rewarding. It is great to see someone become interested in the instrument I have always been fascinated with!
Janet Kuhn
STEM Coordinator
As a former engineer and scientist, I like to ask children to name the one quality a good scientist must have. After listening to their answers, I love to tell them my answer: curiosity! For me, STEM is all about boldly questioning and exploring, learning and having fun. STEM is just another way to stretch a young brain while investigating the physical world around us. Watching someone’s eyes light up when they “get it” or “see it” brings me great joy!
